How Great Thou Creativity: Art2Dream Project Coordinator

Dr. Miwon Choe, Ph. D

Dr. Choe is a recent proud retiree from having served as the professor of art education, Department of Art & Design at Western Kentucky University for 24 years until June 2025. Prior to the WKU appointment, Dr. Choe taught in Washington, Indiana at Lena Dunn and Veale Elementary Schools for a decade that had shaped the value of visual arts in P-12 education. Dr. Choe attributes her success and accomplishments to three teachers at Indiana University, Bloomington where she completed her Ph. D. in Curriculum & Instruction with the emphasis on Art Education and minor in Counseling Psychology; Dr. Guy Hubbard, Dr. Gilbert Clark, and Dr. Enid Zimmerman.

Throughout her WKU career, Dr. Choe coordinated the Super Saturday Art Programs in collaboration with the WKU Center for Gifted Studies for two decades, as well as the Art2Dream Art in Education program that emphasized cross-sector community collaborations in addition to facilitating various P-12 service-learning opportunities. Dr. Choe and her Art2Dream TEAM is one of the four Kentucky 4-H Volunteer Hall of Fame Awardees in 2024 for her contributions and the positive impact upon the lives of Kentucky 4-H members.

In 2011, Dr. Choe initiated the Student Exchange program between WKU Art Education Program and Hanyang University in Seoul, Korea, her native homeland. She has also spent significant amount time in Cuba over the past two decades since 2004 for multiple continuous cross-cultural community art exchange projects including CreArte: Ilustrar un Sueño (Illustrate a Dream), Experimental Art School, and Cuban Teachers Association (APC) that resulted in the culminating art exhibits in 2019-2020, Cuba Amor: Los Rostros y Los Cuentos del Camino (The Island of My Love: The Stories and Faces of Cuba) at Western Kentucky University and Kennesaw State University. Current multi-year collaborative project includes Sisters on the Bridge: Islamic Art of Creative Empathy, Meaning, and Human Understanding with Dr. Mona Hussein from Egypt and Dr. Bird from Kennesaw State University, GA.

Ms. Lauren Kersey is a WKU Class of 2024, BA Visual Studies with double concentrations, Art education and Studio at Western Kentucky University. With her strong studio abilities and professional commitment, Lauren successfully completed an International Student Teaching in Sweden for the Spring 2024. Additionally, Lauren has dedicated a significant amount of time to augmenting her Graphic Design and Digital Skills while serving as www.wkuarteducation blog site project manager throughout her study as an art education pre-service teacher.
